HAKE QUILTING FRAME

from £160.00

Based on historical examples and research provided by Within the Frame (see www.withintheframe.co.uk), these traditional quilting frames provide the perfectly sturdy support needed for quilting by hand.

Based on the vernacular British style, found across Britain from the West Country, through Wales and Ireland and to the northern English uplands and Scottish Borders, this style of frame was commissioned from local carpenters for hundreds of years from at least the 18th century to the Second World War.

Drawing on the knowledge and designs preserved by Elizabeth Hake in her influential 1937 book English Quilting Old and New, this style of frame is comfortable and flexible, offering infinitely adjustable tension on a stable surface to allow both hands free to execute fluid running stitches.

Paying homage to the traditional local materials of the original frames, we sourced linen webbing, fastened to the English sycamore rails with tacks and a leather strip for extra durability, while the swords are made from strong English ash with adjustment provided by a double row of peg holes for detailed tension adjustment. To protect the wood, the frame is finished with natural beeswax. The frames can be disassembled for storage when not in use.

The quilting frames come with brass pegs as standard or can be upgraded to hand turned ash pegs. The frames can be paired with the flat topped Quilting Trestle for the perfect stable base for your work.

The frames are fully customisable for your needs and space, choose from rail lengths to match the size of quilt you’ll be working on. Also customize your swords choosing standard 760mm (30”) or narrow 640mm (25”) to fit your frame into a narrower domestic space. For community or sewing groups choose wide swords 1060mm (42”) to allow makers to work communally around the frame in a square.
